Racing Stripe Plying

Spinning is a passion of mine. I love learning new techniques.

I started with some purple Corriedale sliver. I spun a fairly thick single since I want my finished yarn to be chunky. Next I prepared Northern Lights Roving, the colorway is Circus, by doing some light pre-drafting. Then the plying.

It took a bit for me to get the right speed to get the violet to wrap the roving and not the other way around. The tension needs to be just right to have the yarn taken up on to the bobbin smoothly. When the yarn is overspun or under spun the yarn will not go on to the bobbin.

I can’t wait to see how it will look once the twist has been set.

That will be on Friday afternoon. I like to leave my spun yarn on the bobbin for at least a day to let it settle. I do this before I ply and set the twist.
