I’m working on a pair of socks for myself. They are toe-up, two at a time using the magic loop method, and from a single ball.

I’ve struggled with making socks before. They were all top-down. But using a toe-up pattern is much much easier. I feel like I have more control of how the sock fits than when they are made the other way.

The sock yarn is from Diamond Select called Footsie. I really like the pattern the yarn is forming. You can buy the yarn from the Boutique.

I try to spin at least four times a week even if it is only for 30 minutes at a time. I find if I spin for two hours once a week I’m less consistent with my yarn making.

It’s similar to learning an instrument and having a good practice schedule.

The yarn I’m making will be a two ply woolen Merino. The colour is lavender.

Racing Stripe Plying

Spinning is a passion of mine. I love learning new techniques.

I started with some purple Corriedale sliver. I spun a fairly thick single since I want my finished yarn to be chunky. Next I prepared Northern Lights Roving, the colorway is Circus, by doing some light pre-drafting. Then the plying.

It took a bit for me to get the right speed to get the violet to wrap the roving and not the other way around. The tension needs to be just right to have the yarn taken up on to the bobbin smoothly. When the yarn is overspun or under spun the yarn will not go on to the bobbin.

I can’t wait to see how it will look once the twist has been set.

That will be on Friday afternoon. I like to leave my spun yarn on the bobbin for at least a day to let it settle. I do this before I ply and set the twist.

Boutique Updates

Things here at Fibre Detours have been busy. If you have visited our boutique recently you've found we have re-organized how we list our products. Rather than having a drop down menu for the various colours of a certain product they are now listed within a category.

The categories are listed in both the sidebar and the header bar. Now there is no guessing of which colour is which. We have listed some of the best sellers in each broad category so you don't need to go through each and every category. Although I invite you to do so... You never know when inspiration might strike you.

New pictures have been added to many of our products with more coming. Now you can see all the beautiful colours of Cottolin Weaving Yarns, Mercerized Cotton, and the stunning fibres.

All of the products listed are either In Stock or will be In Stock within a weeks time (i.e., they have been ordered from our distributor and are on route to us). So there will be no more confusion.
That's right! We Stock All Naturally Finished Ashford Spinning Wheels! Lacquered versions are Custom Orders & will be expedited to you.

Many New Products have come in that were on backorder from our distributors. These include new fibres like Superwash Merino, Peace Silk, and Ramie.
Eri Silk a.k.a. Peace Silk

New knitting needles and accessories such as Lace Blocking Mats & Wires, the Limited Edition Joy Karbonz IC Knitting Needles, and more!

I'd like to say
THANK YOU
to our fantastic customers!

You have helped us surpass our sales goals for the month of April.
Look for surprise sales on some of the items you have bought most often.
They will run throughout the months of May and June.
